Barrio Sucre House
Legalization and retrofit of a house in zone 4A of the Cali seismic microzonation
Key Highlights
- Cali seismic microzonation, zone 4A (soil period between 0.75 and 1.25 s)
- Resonance check: structure period of 0.24 s (range of 0.14 to 0.34 s), with no overlap with the soil period
- Maximum drift of 0.57% (Y) and 0.32% (X)
- Strong column – weak beam check (6/5)
- Design of footings and stairs
Technical Specifications
Context
Two-story single-family house in the Sucre neighborhood of Cali, going through legalization with retrofit and modification. It is located in zone 4A of the Cali seismic microzonation (site class D), which requires a resonance check in addition to the general NSR-10 requirements.
Role
Support role in the structural design. I developed the ETABS modeling, the seismic analysis, the element and foundation design and the calculation report, and supported the production of drawings, under the review and signature of the engineer of record.
Process
- ETABS modeling of the structure, foundation and footings
- Design spectrum per the Cali seismic microzonation
- Resonance check comparing the structure period (±10%) with the range of soil periods
- Design of columns, joints and beams, with a strong column – weak beam check
- Design of footings, slab, stairs and partition walls
Results
- The structure does not fall into resonance with the soil
- Drifts of 0.32% and 0.57%
- 70-page calculation report
Lessons Learned
Working in Cali forces you to think of the soil as part of the dynamic system: a stiff, low-rise building on a deep alluvial deposit is unlikely to resonate, but it has to be demonstrated with the microzonation periods.
